The curriculum involves 1500 hours to satisfy California state requirements. The course includes extensive instruction and practical experience in cutting, hair coloring, perming, customer service, personal appearance and hygiene, personal motivation and development, retail skills, client record keeping, business ethics, sanitation, state laws and regulations, salon-type administration, and job interviewing.

The state of California requires 1000 hours to be licensed as a cosmetologist; however, the School is approved by the state to offer a 1500-hour cosmetology course. Within the additional 500 hours, students will be introduced to additional training in cutting, hair coloring, perming, skin care, makeup, and barbering. The additional hours in the course will also help them better understand all aspects of cosmetology and provide additional practical experience to better prepare them for the industry.

Graduates are prepared to be entry level cosmetologists.

This course is taught in English. Textbooks and course materials are only offered in the English Language.

Cosmetology 1500 Hour Course Overview

Course Hours: 1500 clock hours

The course is divided into pre-clinical classroom instruction and clinical service learning experiences.

  1. Pre-clinical Classroom Instruction: The first 210 hours are devoted to classroom workshops where students learn design principles, technical information, and professional practices.
  2. Clinic Classroom Learning Experience: The remaining 1290 hours are spent in the clinic area where practical experience is gained.

Cosmetology 1500 Hour Course Outline

Your time at Paul Mitchell The School Sherman Oaks for the cosmetology program will be divided into six designations:

  1. Core/Protégé Curriculum: The student spends their first hours in orientation, known as the Core program, instills the basic fundamentals. Students are graded and evaluated using written, oral, and practical testing methods. Students must successfully complete the Core curriculum prior to attending regularly scheduled daily classes in cutting, coloring, permanent waving, and chemical texture services.
  2. Clinic Classroom Learning Experience: Your clinic classroom time from 210 to 1500 hours will be guided with individual attention and group learning experiences using mini-classes, monthly worksheets, and periodic evaluations developed specifically for this monitoring progress. This is when you begin experiencing your clinic classroom education on paying clients in the clinic classroom area.
  3. Classroom Learning Experience: Your classroom time from 280 to 1500 hours is divided into six (6) areas: cutting, coloring, texture, makeup, skin, and nails. Each area has an instructor who conducts the different specialty classes each week; Classroom Learning Experiences may also include retail, motivation, self improvement, professional development, and attendance education which may be conducted by an instructor, non-licensed staff member or guest artist.
  4. Adaptive Curriculum: From 280 to 900 hours you will enter a new phase of elective classroom workshops coupled with challenging practical services designed to continue building you into a confident designer.
  5. Creative Curriculum: You will spend your last 600 hours at Paul Mitchell The School Sherman Oaks in “high gear” by dressing, acting, and working like a true professional. You will use your own artistic and creative abilities, coupled with the assistance of the Learning Leaders, to prepare yourself for your future beauty industry career.

The instructional program of Paul Mitchell The School Sherman Oaks meets or exceeds the state requirements:

Subject State Minimum Requirements

Health and Safety: Including instruction on hazardous substances, chemical safety, safety data sheets, protection from hazardous chemicals, preventing chemical injuries, health and safety laws and regulations, and preventing communicable diseases.

Board Approved Health & Safety Course (B&P 7389(a)): Including instruction on hazardous substances, basic labor laws, and physical and sexual assault awareness.

Disinfection and Sanitation: Including instruction on disinfection procedures to protect the health and safety of consumers as well as the technician and proper disinfection procedures for equipment used in establishments. 100
Chemical Hair Services: This includes coloring, straightening, waving, bleaching, hair analysis, predisposition and strand tests, safety precautions, formula mixing, and the use of dye removers. Instruction must include services for individuals with all hair types and textures. 200
Hairstyling Services: This includes arranging, blow-drying, cleansing, curling, dressing, hair analysis, shampooing, waving, non-chemical straightening, and hair cutting. Instruction must include services for individuals with all hair types and textures. 200
Skin Care: Including instruction on chemical and manual facials and massaging, stimulating, exfoliating, cleansing, or beautifying the face, scalp, neck, or body by the use of hands, esthetic devices, cosmetic products, antiseptics, lotions, tonics, or creams that do not result in the ablation or destruction of the live tissue. 150
Hair Removal and Lash and Brow Beautification: Including instruction on tinting and perming eyelashes and brows and applying eyelashes to any person, and includes removing superfluous hair from the body of any person by use of depilatories, tweezers, sugaring, nonprescription chemicals, or waxing, or by the use of devices and appliances of any kind or description, except by the use of lasers or light waves, which are commonly known as rays. 50
Manicure and Pedicure: Including instruction on water and oil manicures, hand and arm massage, foot and ankle massage, nail analysis, and artificial nail services, including, but not limited to, acrylic, liquid and powder brush-ons, dip, tips, wraps, and repairs. 100
Additional Chemical Hair Services: Includes instruction on advanced coloring techniques to include formula mixing, advanced foil placement, block coloring, hand painting techniques, and color correction services. Advanced chemical services include specialty perm wraps and chemical relaxer services. 200
Additional Hairstyling Services: Includes instruction on precision cutting for tapering techniques, detailing and freehand cutting techniques. Advanced long hair natural hair design techniques include thermal pressing, twist-outs, palm rolling, comb coiling, locks, braiding patterns, hair extensions and upstyle and blow drying techniques. 250
Additional Skin Care: Including instruction on beautifying the face with advanced makeup techniques to include face, eyes, lips and brows using a variety of cosmetic products. 50

The institution offers employment assistance to help graduates’ efforts to secure education-related employment that includes, but is not limited to training in professionalism, resume’ development, job interview preparation and job search skills. No additional hours will be required to complete the additional training and these additional course are not a requirement for state licensure.

Exceeds means that during the course of your training you may complete more services then what is listed, however no additional hours, over the 1500 required by the Board of Barbering and Cosmetology (BBC) will be required.

COSMETOLOGY 1500 HOUR PROGRAM TESTING AND GRADING PROCEDURE

The following tests and grading procedures are used to assess student learning and mastery of course content in the 1500-hour course:

  1. Academic theory exams: Students must receive a grade of 70% or higher on each assigned theory exam.
  2. Core written and practical skills evaluation test: Students must receive a grade of 70% or higher on each written exam and each practical skill exam in order to complete the Core program. The exams are an overview of instruction taught during the Core schedule. All Core written and practical skill exams must be passed with a 70% in order to transition to the Clinic Classroom. If students are unable to pass each exam after two attempts, the student may be asked to withdraw from the program and re-enroll in the next available Core class start date.
  3. Final exam 1 (approximately 800-hour written exam): This test covers an overview of all related cosmetology subjects (e.g., anatomy, chemistry, etc.). Students must receive a grade of 70% or higher on all final exams.
  4. Final exam 2 (approximately 1400-hour written test): The written exam covers an overview of all theory instruction, California state law, and other items covered on the state cosmetology exam. Students must receive a grade of 70% or higher on all final exams.
  5. Clinic Practical Skill Assessments: Future Professionals progress in practical skill assessments and theory hours will be digitally monitored on a weekly basis by the Future Professional Advisor using the Course Key app. All assigned practical skill assessments must be completed in order to complete the program.
